UN Report Back NO REST FOR THE AWAKE - MINAGAHET CHAMORRO

Independent Guhan to host United Nations Report Back Event, Provide Updates on Recent Historic Trip

For Immediate Release, October 23, 2017 Independent Guhan is hosting a Report Back on October 26 from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. at the University of Guam School of Business and Public Administration Room 131. At the forum, a group of delegates, who recently traveled to the United Nations in New York, will provide updates on their testimonies and meetings concerning Guams decolonization.

Independent Guhan organized a group of twelve members and volunteers, who petitioned the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee (4th Committee) at their annual meeting to discuss the situation in Guam. This trip was especially historic, because the Commission on Decolonization also sent a strong delegation Governor Eddie Baza Calvo, Vice Speaker Therese Terlaje, Senator Telena Nelson and Dr. LisaLinda Natividad all testified before the 4th Committee. Senator Fernando Esteves attended the 4th Committee meeting and joined both Commission and Independent Guhan members in several days of meetings with ambassadors and representatives from a dozen independent nations and other non self-governing territories.

Independent Guhan organized presentations about Guam at several universities in the area including Columbia University, New York University, Rutgers University and Barnard College, where both members of Independent Guhan and the Commission on Decolonization were able to talk with diverse groups of students and professors about Guams quest for decolonization.

Both IG and Commission members will share their experiences in New York at the Report Back. A short video documenting the trip will also be shown and a complimentary compilation of the testimonies delivered at the UN will be disseminated at the event. Independent Guhans involvement in this trip to the UN trip was made possible through generous donatio...

Ngurrara Canvas awakes back on country after 20-year journey Koori Mail

MORE than 100 people gathered in the Great Sandy Desert, WA, to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the Ngurrara Canvas II. The canvas, measuring 8m by 10m, is a vivid map of Ngurrara country, and was prepared as evidence for the Ngurrara native title claim. This is the first time the canvas has been returned to the banks of Lake Pirnini, where it was originally painted in 1997. Terry Murray, the youngest of the 40 artists to work on the canvas and the head of the Ngurrara Canvas Management Committee, says its time to Parnkimanu Ngurrara to awaken the canvas back out on Ngurrara country. The canvas illustrates the significant jila (springs) and jumu (soaks) across Ngurrara country, with the only concession to Western mapping a depiction of the Canning Stock Route. Ten years after the canvas was painted, Ngurrara were granted exclusive possession native title over 77, 595 square kilometresan area larger than Tasmania.

"HULI - A Visit With Andre Perez"

When we first heard about HULI, the Hawai`i Unity & Liberation Institute, we knew we had to talk with Andre Perez to discover what its all about.  Our curiosity was heightened even more because Andre, who was one of the protectors arrested at Mauna Kea, had also spent some time at Standing Rock leading trainings. When we met with him he explained HULI was created to train people throughout Hawai`i in highly effective non-violent direct action techniques. Join us in our fascinating visit with Andre as he shares with us his journey, how he learned these new skills, and what he experienced that made him realize the importance of teaching these new methods in Hawai`i -...
